It’s been so many years I lived at Jogjakarta but I just once come to visit Kasongan. It’s because I accompany friend who search a unique souvenir from Jogjakarta. Finally we go by motorcycle from Depok area in Sleman through Kasongan in Bantul.
Kasongan is a name of a tourism place in Bantul district, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta which famous with its earthenware vessels. This place situated at Pedukuhan Kajen, Desa Bangunjiwo, Kecamatan Kasihan, Kabupaten Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, about 6 km from Alun-alun Utara Yogyakarta head into south.

Since 1971-1972, Kasongan have a pretty good progression. Sapto Hudoyo (a famous artist from Yogyakarta) help develop this village by giving an art touch and commercial touch in a earthenware vessels design so the earthenware vessels not always monotone and boring, but the earthenware vessels have a high art value and have a high economical value. Kasongan earthenware vessels commercial in large scale by Sahid Ceramic in early 1980.
Earthenware vessels from Kasongan have a flask form with a various motif such as dragon, rose, peacock, etc. They also have a various size of pot, frame, and also furniture like table and chair. The product is developing into some artificial flower from banana leaf, household furnishings from bamboo, various mask and so on. That handicraft has a high quality and has exported to Europe and America. This village is always busy serve a tourist from local area and foreign countries too.
From Jogjakarta, this village is situated at right side of road and signed by a huge gate. Through this road is a store and gallery which sell various earthenware vessels and handicraft. You can walk and visit it one by one. There’s so many huge and beautiful statue, like this Doberman I hug. Good, isn’t it?
